Unlike short-term sadness, depression is a mental state in which loss of interest, low energy, and negative thoughts persist for a prolonged period. This article covers the common symptoms of depression and the place of depression tests in the assessment process.

Common symptoms of depression

  • Persistent sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness
  • Loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities
  • Changes in sleep and appetite (increase or decrease)
  • Low energy, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating
  • Worthlessness, guilt, and negative automatic thoughts

If these symptoms last longer than two weeks and affect daily functioning, it is important to consult a professional.

What are depression tests for?

Depression scales quantify symptoms and help monitor their severity. For example, the Burns Depression Checklist is a 25-question self-report tool that shows symptom severity in band ranges. From a cognitive angle, the Automatic Thoughts Questionnaire measures the frequency of negative thoughts associated with depression.

A result is not a diagnosis

A high depression score indicates intense symptoms but does not by itself diagnose depression. A diagnosis is made only by a mental-health professional, considering symptom duration, functional impact, and the exclusion of other possible causes.

When to seek help

If symptoms last more than two weeks, affect daily life, or involve hopelessness/suicidal thoughts, seek professional help without delay.
